JPG, PNG, HEIC supported

For the best result, upload the highest resolution photo you have. The more pixels in your original image, the greater the detail we can preserve in your portrait. A high-resolution upload means more pixels in the final grid — so while the pixelated style is intentional and part of the aesthetic, your portrait will remain clean, sharp, and clearly recognisable. Faces, expressions, and details will all come through beautifully.

Welcome to the Family

Hancock's Paintings is a genuine family business — every portrait you order is touched by someone you'll find below.

Simon

Dad · The Painter

The brush behind every hand-painted portrait. Simon has spent decades honing his craft, and there is nothing he loves more than bringing a family's story to life one pixel at a time. Every square of colour is placed with intention and care.

Yvonne

Mum

The heart of the operation. Yvonne keeps everything running smoothly — from customer enquiries to making sure every order is wrapped beautifully before it leaves the studio. She has an eye for quality that nothing slips past.

Josh

Eldest Son

The tech side of Hancock's. Josh built the pixel conversion software that turns your family photos into the precise colour grids Simon paints from. He also manages the website and makes sure the digital side of things runs perfectly.

Theo

Youngest Son

The studio's resident creative director (self-appointed). Theo has an incredible natural eye for colour and often consults on which pixel palettes look most striking. He's also very good at finding biscuits.

Elodie

Daughter

Elodie is in charge of all things social and brings a wonderful warmth to how the Hancock story is shared with the world. She's the reason so many families find us in the first place — and we're very glad they do.

The Studio

Where the Magic Happens

Nestled in the family home, the Hancock studio is where every portrait begins its journey. It smells of linseed oil and fresh canvas, and it's full of the kind of quiet focus that only comes from doing something you truly love.

What Families Are Saying

★★★★★

I ordered the hand-painted portrait of our family for my husband's birthday and I genuinely could not believe the result. It's hanging in our living room and every single person who visits asks about it. Absolutely stunning.

We got the printed version as a Christmas gift for the grandparents and they were moved to tears. There's something magical about seeing your whole family in pixels — it sounds strange until you hold it in your hands.

The level of detail Simon puts into each pixel is extraordinary. You can tell this is made with real love and skill, not just printed from a computer. It's art. Our family portrait will be passed down for generations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before ordering your portrait.

What photo resolution do I need to upload?

Any modern smartphone photo is more than sufficient — we recommend at least 1 megapixel (e.g. 1000 × 1000 pixels) for best results. Since our process reduces your image to a pixel grid of around 1,000 pixels, even older photos tend to work beautifully. The most important thing is that faces are clearly visible and well-lit in the original image.

How many pixels will my portrait have?

Our default is approximately 1,000 pixels total — typically a 32 × 32 grid. Each pixel is a single flat colour, one painted square. You can request a custom pixel count when you place your order: smaller grids (say 400 pixels) give a bold, abstract look; larger grids (up to 2,500 pixels) preserve more facial detail. We're happy to advise which size works best for your specific photo.

Can I choose the number of pixels in my portrait?

Absolutely. Custom pixel counts are one of our most popular options. When placing your order, simply mention your preferred grid size (e.g. 20 × 20, 32 × 32, or 50 × 50) and we'll generate a preview for you to approve before any painting begins. Different pixel counts also affect the price, particularly for hand-painted portraits — we'll confirm everything before we start.

How long does delivery take?

Printed portraits are typically dispatched within 5–7 working days of order confirmation. Hand-painted portraits require more time — please allow 3–5 weeks for Simon to complete the painting, as each one is crafted entirely by hand with the care it deserves. We'll keep you updated throughout the process and provide tracking once dispatched. Rush orders may be available — just ask.

What paint brand and colour book is used for hand-painted portraits?

Simon works with professional-grade acrylic paints and uses a proprietary colour reference system developed specifically for the Hancock's Paintings process. Each pixel colour code (e.g. #47B) corresponds to a precisely mixed paint shade in our reference book — ensuring consistency across the canvas and the ability to produce matching additional canvases if ever needed. The full colour reference booklet can be supplied with your order on request.

Can I include pets or more than four people in my portrait?

Yes — any photo, any number of people (or animals!). We've painted portraits of entire extended families, beloved dogs, cats, and even horses. The pixel grid adapts to whatever is in your photo. For groups larger than six people, we recommend increasing the pixel count to ensure everyone is clearly represented. Get in touch and we can advise the best approach for your specific group.

Do I get to approve the pixel version before it's painted or printed?

Always. Once we have your photo and your chosen settings, we'll send you a digital preview of the pixelated version for your approval before anything is painted or printed. You can request adjustments to the pixel count, colour palette, or cropping at this stage. We won't proceed until you're completely happy with what you see.
